Forty projects from the plugin era and after — microsites, rich media, installations, and spare-time experiments. Most of these ran on platforms that no longer exist. The screenshots survive, exactly as they were.

In the early 2000’s, Nissan was set to relaunch its fabled “Z” model. Chiat was tasked with creating the microsite to build buzz and provide enthusiasts with a few tasty media bits prior to the launch of the 350Z.

An immersive environment to introduce the user to the characters and experiences of the new Sony Playstation game Primal. Utilized cut-scene video for level transitions.

Initially thought up as a project where I could use a ColdFusion beta (I’d never even touched CFML), once the ColdFusion beta expired, it then became a project for me to learn PHP and mySQL… I then later went on to make a (throwaway) port of the site in order to learn .NET.

Corporate home for TBWA Worldwide. Flash configured itself via a configuration file, which was generated by a TBWA-made CMS admin area. Map/location section utilized Flash Remoting (AMFPHP flavor) to sort/filter through the huge number of TBWA offices before drawing to screen for the user.

My very last lines of code and bugs quashed for Avenue A | Razorfish involved integrating the Flash with their existing JSP-based eCommerce system. Adidas – Boston Marathon – “What’s Your Reason?”

A Flash kiosk application created for deployment by Adidas at the 2007 Boston Marathon. When in place, allowed the user to enter their “reason” for running, take a photo (using the kiosk’s onboard camera), and receive a takeaway one-sheet containing (amongst other things) their photo, their reason, and a splash of Adidas branding.

Constructed over two days at Adobe Flash Camp 2008. Avenue Fighter is a political-themed Twitter-controlled street fight done up in classic 8-bit Nintendo “Street Fighter” style.

A dynamic display ad that took data from the eBay Motors API and displayed said data using the Yahoo Maps API. Geotargeting was used in ad trafficking, allowing the map to initialize at the user’s approximate location.

It looks a little chintzy, but YOU try fitting a physics engine, sound AND good graphics into a non-rich media ad. Final ad size fit nicely under the 40k limit… coming in at a svelte 37k

An interactive video rich-media ad which follows a woman on her morning run. As she moves through the seasons, her wardrobe changes and a selection menu is displayed behind her. At any given moment, the user can select from the product menu, see details about that particular product, and (if they wish) go directly to that product’s page on the Nike Store site.

Hello There

Combine Adobe AIR with Bluetooth with BlueCove (a lightweight server capable of relaying said Bluetooth data) and you get the, (maybe) cleverly-named “Hello There”. When running, it constantly scaned for Bluetooth devices in-range & made note of their device ID.

Dynamic display advertising campaign created for (the online) Nike Store. Applied concepts of polymorphism and runtime compositing to create a lightweight shell which pulled in the proper visual and text assets depending on the configuration received from the server.

Affiliatør didn’t get much further than one day of development. This proof-of-concept was born when I had account people telling me about how affiliates were creating their own perverted versions of current eBay ads. I thought to myself “What if eBay affiliates could just download an app that would let them create their own ads with their own copy… but using our design template?

Pronounced like “chimera”, and modeled after said word… Kimera GPS (“glyph pack system”) is the codename for a process I created wherein “font-packs” are compiled on-demand by the server and fed to dynamic display ads in the wild.

A microsite where visitors could record video of themselves (via their computer’s onboard camera) singing along with the AskDeals jingle track and share the resulting video. The home/landing page of the microsite played an seamless & endless loop of all submitted tracks.

A reusable AS3 codebase, used to create dynamic display ads for eBay. Packages up all of the service calls, load management, asset/font management, etc into a nice little package that’s fairly lightweight and super-easy to integrate into each project’s Flash creative.

Using the Microsoft Kinect for sensor input, Adobe AIR for display, and a number of open-source drivers/frameworks for everything in-between, Daydreamer was a digital installation project that allowed the user to create music and visuals through moving their bodies.
